Real Life: Working as a PR Intern

Our most recent intern, Katie, shares some of her final thoughts after a whirlwind two months working in fashion PR at Publicity Room.

My name is Katie and I’m a fourth-year Human Ecology student from the University of Alberta. I major in Clothing, Textiles, and Material Culture and minor in Fashion Merchandising. Part of Human Ecology involves doing a practicum at the end of your degree, to provide students with opportunities for hands-on learning and to ease them into the workforce. I was lucky enough to be placed at Publicity Room, and I have spent the past six weeks learning everything I possibly can about the world of PR.

Public relations is made out to be an incredibly glamorous career. You think of PR and the first thing that comes to mind is some celebrity’s publicist, dressed to the nines and drinking champagne at a fancy event. But here’s what I learned through working 200 hours in a public relations firm: it’s hard work. It’s not all glitz and glamour. Publicists spend hours at their desks, writing backgrounders, press releases, media outreach lists, event flows, and the list goes on and on. They meticulously edit pitches to the media to make sure the perfect message is conveyed to the right person. They go through tons of emails, texts, and phone calls each day with their clients, answering questions and providing updates. They juggle dozens of clients and events, all while keeping a smile on their face. Being a publicist? Not easy.

I experienced so much while I was here. I got to work with a lot of different clients and help write backgrounders, pitches, and more. I made up a media outreach list and came up with story angles for one of our clients. I tracked down photos for a newspaper article and items for gift bags for clients. I attended client meetings and helped execute media events. I planned an entire wardrobe styling workshop, and strategized everything from catering ideas to the graphic used on social media. Throughout the six weeks I was lucky enough to meet a lot of Publicity Room’s clients, who are all amazing, inspiring local businesses that are in the process of transforming our city.

I am so grateful I was able to work under Janis and Brittany for this past month. They are such amazing, hilarious, and hard-working ladies that taught me so much more than I ever imagined. This entire process has been incredibly fulfilling. I have met so many cool people, done so many amazing things, and learned so much. I am very sad to be leaving, but excited for the next chapter of my life to begin!  – Katie

We wish Katie the best of luck in her future career pursuits!
